Warning: This post contains spoilers for Tuesday & # 39; s It Is Us .
If you were caught off guard by what happened this weekend this weekend Is It Us Like the watchmen of "Songbird Road: Part Two", the mission by Kev to help his new role Uncle Nicky deal with post-traumatic stress disorder and alcoholism fails rather than spectacularly. And when an accomplished Kevin goes to Nicky's trailer alone to check out some fixes, he tries to drink a serious amount of his uncle's wine, ending a time of sobriety which began in Kev was in the rehab last season.
" I know what's going on, but I do not think Kevin did anything," says Hartley. "I think he does not expect anything to happen. Until the end, he is under the impression that he is in control of this matter."
Executive producer / co-showrunner Isaac Aptaker observes that the sudden end to Kevin & # 39; s long, emotional journey to get back to reality The medallion of Jack "is a real blow" to The (former) Manny. "It's a low point, and he's moving to what he turns to get through the things, which is the bottle."
In a devoted TVLine conversation, Hartley explores how the "criticism family" that has progressed in past episodes seriously challenged Kevin's memories to Jack. "The whole thing he was thinking about his father," he said, "now his ears are open."
Read Hartley's break-down episode and offer his thoughts on Kev's immediate future.
TVLINE | What happened to your mind when you first heard that Kevin would feed after a long time?
One of the things I was thinking was that when he called to Zoe, and he picked up the phone, and they talked about what was going on for a moment, I wondered if he wanted to get off on that path, do you know? This is a real thing, it happens all the time. People are obsessed, and then "they fall into the cart," and they are reminiscent of … This is a daily struggle for her. Hopefully, he'll do it right this time. Hopefully, it will not be big, big thing for him. But gosh, it's painful, is not it? Because I feel that he's getting away, and now we're here again.
TVLINE | How do you think this development between Kevin and Zoe?
There are many things that come with it, right? This idea that he got this thing under control, and their relationship is based on that fact. And then he will discover that he is not, at least now. She does not care for herself. Kevin, he has a great, big spirit. And he got this idea that he could solve many problems. He's really good at organizing other people, or helping other people, and being there for one hour of need.
Just to walk through it: He gets a rehab, and he immediately starts placing job prospects, and goes to a movie premiere that seems to be very good. And then he meets a woman, falls in love with her, and moves to her place – and we do not see him at the words [Alcoholics Anonymous]. We do not see him with a sponsor. We do not see him talking about alcohol. She does the thing she has done with her father, and is so fun to repeat the patterns. He's the one who says, "Listen, I do not have to cry at all times. The dead, my father's big deal, okay? It's been a long time. I'm over it. "And then you realize, it's just his way of dealing with them – not dealing with them – and it's the same kind of thing he's doing in his addiction, and it's back to the kind of bite him. So, that's it.
There is embarrassment, shame, lack of capacity, there is a sense of failure. It feels, "I lied to these people, now I have to pick up the pieces." He is likely to go to a sort of a hiding thing to try to make sure people do not see what he really is up to, which is a sign of clues. So it's likely that everything will fall for him. I hope not, but maybe it is.
TVLINE | The upside is when it happens to him, you get good things to play.
[ Laughs ] Well, yes. I know. What a selfish thing to say, but I really, 100 percent agree with you.
TVLINE | You will release AA meetings. I mention that we have not seen him in anything like this. You say that this is not happening on offscreen, either?
Yeah … I thought, "Well, maybe they did not write it. Maybe he was going to meetings and they did not write it." But you know, our writers do not. This is a comment. She likes, you know, instead of going through the door and becoming like, "Oh yes, I see a producer," [Zoe] said, "How is your meeting?" And he said, "It's good," and then they will have their lives. [The writers] do not shine on anything, so I really believe he's not just going. I do not really have that fact, but that's how I'm playing it, he's just, he neglects to take care of himself in the middle of caring for everyone, and make sure that this new relationship is good, and dealing with Vietnam, and dealing with Zoe and all his stuff, and he says, I do not want to move, and kind of slaughter him, and then come back to him. I think he just neglected self-care, honestly.
