San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media to provide some updates on the injury on Monday. Shanahan said the tight end of Jordan Reed has a knee sprain and goes into a short-term injured reserve. As soon as Reed returned to the game on Sunday, he sustained an MCL injury. Shanahan said Reed’s return schedule is between six and eight weeks.
Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle), George Kittle (knee), and Raheem Mostert (knee) will all be examined in practice on Wednesday. Shanahan also mentioned that K’Waun Williams has a discomfort, so he will be examined as well.
Shanahan said linebacker Mark Nzeochoa injured his quad and is likely to head to the short-term injured reserve. He added that the team will decide whether to place Dee Ford, who has a knee and neck injury, going to the injured reserve in the next few days. The 49ers did not expect to have Dre Greenlaw, who is battling a contusion in the thigh, next Sunday against the Eagles, either.
Deebo Samuel will rehearse on Wednesday. Shanahan said Samuel has made a lot of progress over the past two weeks, and Deebo has been pumped to practice and play but warned this is the first time since February, so the 49ers will be careful and make sure Samuel is in play form before he sees the farm.
Shanahan said he spoke to Kyle Nelson, who struggled to seem like one of his snaps on Sunday against the Giants, and the team will take long snappers on Tuesday and find out what to do with the position ahead. Kyle said Nelson apologized to him and Shanahan said, “thank you, we didn̵7;t cost.” That doesn’t sound like a player getting closer around.
Shanahan is not sure if Garoppolo will fit in this Sunday. He said Jimmy G looks better than he did at this point last week, but he will review the damage as the week goes on.
Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley is on the concussion protocol.
So, to repeat, here are the damages:
Short-term IR: Reed (knee), Nzeocha (quad)
Possible short-term IR / Out this week: Ford (rear)
Moseley on concussion protocol.
