Attack on France: Teacher killed in horrific attack near Paris, launches terrorism investigation

A teacher was killed in a horrific attack near Paris on Friday, officials said, adding that police had killed the attacker and were conducting a terrorism investigation.

A middle school history teacher was killed on the streets of Conflans Sainte-Honorine, a suburb northwest of Paris.

The French newspaper Le Parisien identified the victim as “Samuel P.”, and reported that the teacher opened a discussion with his students about the caricatures of the prophet Mohammed. He received threats up to 10 days before the attack, and a parent filed a complaint.

Police responded to reports of a “suspicious person” walking near the school. Officers saw a man with a knife in the area shortly after the attack.

The initial report stated that the teacher had been beheaded, but subsequent reports said the assailant had instead cut the teacher̵

7;s throat. Police have not yet confirmed the victim’s status.

A police source said witnesses heard shouting “Allah Akbar,” or “God is Great,” but police have not yet verified this account, according to reports. Prosecutors said they treat the attack as “a murder linked to a terrorist organization.”

Police shot and killed the suspect after he failed to respond to requests to drop his weapon, Reuters reported. French broadcaster BFMTV reported that the alleged attacker was 18 and was born in Moscow.

The attack came as French President Emmanuel Macron is pushing for a new law against what he calls domestic “separatism,” notably Islamic radicals accused of indoctrinating vulnerable people through home schools, extremist preaching and other activities.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, who is traveling to Morocco, will be returning to France as a matter of urgency.

The attack is yet another series in Paris connected to issues of the Islamic faith.

Last month, a man who moved to France from Pakistan used a meat cleaver to attack and injure two people outside the former office of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Charlie Hebdo himself was the scene of the attack in January 2015, resulting in a dozen deaths and nearly casualties after two guns entered the two offices after it published a cartoon depicting the prophet Mohammed.

In Islam, the prophet’s warnings are an unspeakable issue, with many believing it to be forbidden.
