Golf expert Matthias Schwab missed his first European Tour tournament win yesterday. The 24-year-old Styrian blew his trumpet on the last day and finally beat Englishman Tyrrell Hatton in the fourth hole of an exciting jump-off at the Turkish Airlines Open in Antalya. After all, he set his best result on the European Tour.
Everything seems to be done in the course of the Par-72 on the Turkish Riviera. As the fourth Austrian after Bernd Wiesberger (7 wins), Markus Brier (2) and Martin Wiegele (1) should beat Schwab's time. But he could not repeat his strong performance of the previous day, not taking the lead with three strokes at the end of the line. The competition is closer to the final day.
.8 million euros
In one failure, he saved himself with three birdies and a total of 268 blows in the jump-off. In the first play-off with six players since the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship 2003 he shouted out with the Hatton competitor for the competition. In the fourth extra hole, however, 28-year-old Hatton exploded under flood lights and claimed his fourth title on tour. Schwab, who secured second place in Hamburg in September, lost the win bonus of 1.8 million euros. He stayed – like every second, reaching the jump – 390,000 euros. "My game was okay, I had some promising situations, but I only hit very few putts," Schwab argued.
But in his entire professional year, Schwab made another test of talent. In the Ryder Cup qualification, he is mixing. He also breaks into the top 100 in the world rankings and takes a big step towards his major debut in 2020. At Race in Dubai he will appear in 14th place, the season finale of the European tour in the emirate is will start on the 21st of November.
Whatever the second Austrian, Bernd Wiesberger. Burgenlander came in 49th place with 283 strokes after a final round of seventy-seven years.
