‘Avengers’ Still Need To Answer A Key Question About Its New Characters

So, we now know that the Avengers delayed the release of the first post-launch character Kate Bishop, from late October to a few hours in November (please, please before the next gen launch of the week).

I do not reciprocate that to them. There is a lot to fix in the game and I know they are working on that. But I use my strange powers as a Doctor to see a possible future where an issue with these new characters grows.

Specifically, Crystal Dynamics has yet to explain something that seems very clear about not only the next two characters, but it looks like a bunch more to come.

How does Kate Bishop differ from Hawkeye, given that both are archers?

But this is not the only pair. The Avengers seem to be doing some sort of “echo fighter”

; thing from Smash Bros. where you have similar characters effectively different versions of each other. We’ve seen a leak, lengthy list of potential upcoming characters the game is considering, with a lot of potential echo pairing there. Besides Kate and Hawkeye we have:

  • Iron Man – War Machine
  • Black Widow – Mockingbird
  • Captain Marvel – Mar-Vell

And then the others already can be an echo-ish pair

  • Hulk – She-Hulk
  • Captain America – Winter Soldier
  • Ant-Man – Wasp (though Wasp can fly)

But the idea is that for many of these characters, if they are “echo warriors” they can share transition sets, albeit perhaps with some tweaks. As in, you wouldn’t really have a War Machine without his Gatling Gun, but would he also have Iron Man repulsors and rockets?

So that’s the first question the game has to answer, how these sets of transitions differ from echoes. But my question is more based on development: leveling and gear.

In Smash Bros. you just pick an echo fighter and play with them. In Avengers, you have to level the characters to 50 to unlock their entire transition range, then you have to adapt them up to 150 strengths, which takes a tremendous amount of farming and upgrading materials and even gated currency like Polychoron for artifacts. Ay wala of which is shared between these echo characters? I can’t imagine spending so much time getting Kate Bishop to 50/150, to get Hawkeye a month later and he wants, two different types of arrows, but I still have to start the process again.

Again, since we do not yet have answers to any of these, I cannot say for sure that this will be a problem. But sure there is potential to be a problem if I ever have a concern. I don’t care about having echo characters, but I played this game with a ton of metric and I only got my fourth character above 145. That process for each character had to take place, down to the term investment in time if the idea actually has a dozen or more heroes appearing over time, along with some mirrors of each. We may still be too far away to deal with Crystal Dynamics, but I think it all matters.
