BUTLER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE / WYOU) – A crash involving a flat bed truck hauling a million honey bees is to blame for closing a stretch of Interstate 81 Friday night.
The bees were being carried in boxes around 5:30 pm when the driver lost control of the driver and crashed.
It sent bees pouring and urging in that area, forcing the authorities to close six miles along I-81 South from Exit 151 B, Interstate 80 Westbound interchange, and Exit 145, the West Hazleton Exit .
An EMS Chief called a nearby beekeeper who he knew would turn the bees.
“What they do is, are they trying to restore the hives, trying to save as many bees as possible, and reloading them in the trailer and delivering them,”; EMS Chief James Sharp said , Valley Regional Fire and Rescue.
Police directed traffic on Route 93 while the interstate was closed.
No injuries were reported, but a firefighter suffered a bee sting.
