Bly Manor’s Haunted Premiere Has an Easter Egg for Stephen King The Shining

Now that Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor has been out for more than a week, providing plenty of opportunity to watch most or all of the 9-episode series, we quickly dive into the first episode, “A Great Beautiful Place , “and take a peek at the fun Stephen King / Shining nod flashing fast. Of course, it fits perfectly that director Mike Flanagan would throw a King reference, and a Shining there, considering how he adapted the novels King and Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep – the last of which was a follows both Stanley Kubrick’s book The Shining King and The Shining film, which contains some of the most iconic images of horror movies of all time.

At the start of Bly Manor, Victoria Pedretti̵

7;s Dani, who will soon move to Bly Manor, will be staying in a London hostel – in Room 217. Better known to royal fans as a room with a bad old unmarried woman in the bathtub in The glowing. That phantom, and the tub too, really came back with more popularity in Doctor Sleep.

Of course, in Kubrick’s film, which contains a ton of changes to the King’s original material, the room that haunts Jack and Danny Torrance is Room 237. But in this book is Room 217. Here is Dani returning to her room …

Here is a little backstory on the reason for changing the room number. The hotel that stood outside The Shining “Overlook” in the movie, The Timberland Lodge, posted the following details on their site:

Kubrick was asked not to describe Room 217 (featured in the book) in The Shining, as future guests at the Lodge may be afraid to stay there. So one that was not in the room, room 237, was replaced by a movie. Surprisingly, and somewhat ironically, Room 217 is requested more often than any other room on the Timberline.

Naturally, Flanagan used the original room number from the book for the fun little hat tip.

But that’s not the only detail lurking in the background of The Haunting of Bly Manor. We watch over 50 hidden ghosts hiding in the shadows of the series – check it out!
