At the start of Bly Manor, Victoria Pedretti̵7;s Dani, who will soon move to Bly Manor, will be staying in a London hostel – in Room 217. Better known to royal fans as a room with a bad old unmarried woman in the bathtub in The glowing. That phantom, and the tub too, really came back with more popularity in Doctor Sleep.
Of course, in Kubrick’s film, which contains a ton of changes to the King’s original material, the room that haunts Jack and Danny Torrance is Room 237. But in this book is Room 217. Here is Dani returning to her room …
Here is a little backstory on the reason for changing the room number. The hotel that stood outside The Shining “Overlook” in the movie, The Timberland Lodge, posted the following details on their site:
Kubrick was asked not to describe Room 217 (featured in the book) in The Shining, as future guests at the Lodge may be afraid to stay there. So one that was not in the room, room 237, was replaced by a movie. Surprisingly, and somewhat ironically, Room 217 is requested more often than any other room on the Timberline.
Naturally, Flanagan used the original room number from the book for the fun little hat tip.
