Orkin, an Atlanta-based pest control service, ranks U.S. cities based on the number of new rodent treatments from September 1 to August 31 of each year. The result is a list of 50 cities, with the most changing spots every time the list is updated. However, Chicago is No. 1 still.
Rounding out the top 10 on Orkin’s list are Los Angeles, New York, Washington, DC, San Francisco, Detroit, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Denver and Minneapolis.
How pandemic has worsened rat populations
Statewide orders to stay at home and nearby businesses not only affect the human population, according to Orkin.
“Closing the entire community has led to a decrease in the amount of food available to rats, especially in dense commercial areas,” according to the website. “Some jurisdictions have reported an increase in rodent activity as rodents seek new food sources.”
And Orkin warned that rat activity “would only continue to increase” as rodents began to search for warm shelter as the months cooled.
