Child bitten by rabid raccoons in Chautauqua County



TOWN OF NORTH HARMONY, NY (WKBW) – A boy in Chautauqua County was bitten by a rabid raccoon while hunting, according to the County Health Department's Environmental Health Unit and the People's Health Services Chautauqua.

Officials say this is the first known rabid animal in the county's county.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, the boy was hunting a turkey with his father near Open Meadows Road at the Town of North Harmony at the end of the week when the raccoon

"This event should serve reminders of residents, especially outdoor enthusiasts (hikers, hunters, etc.), that animal rabies is a serious public health concern and continues to exist in Chautauqua County, "says Mark Stow, County Health Services Director. "Raccoons are, for now, animals that are likely to be strong in the state."

The Department of Health Services and People reminds the public that about one in ten animals infected with the rabies virus will be aggressive and attack without any incitement, while other rabid animals will may appear tame.

There are free rabies vaccination clinics available to the public at Chautauqua County throughout the year.
