In connection with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, members of the Physicians Committee for Medicinal Medicine are seeking a petition to the Food and Drug Administration to place a cheese warning label. The requested label reads, "Breast milk contains reproductive hormones that can increase the risk of breast cancer mortality."
The non-profit submitted the request on October 3, 2019. If accepted, cheese manufacturers should include a warning label on all milk cheese products. The group has been outspoken about preventative medicine.
Milk products are linked to breast cancer. Estrogen in dairy products from cows increases breast cancer mortality. Since dairy products are concentrated in milk, hormones are also becoming more concentrated.
Many studies have shown the link between dairy and breast cancer. A 2013 study found that for women previously diagnosed with breast cancer, eating one or more servings of high-fat dairy leads to 49% higher mortality . A more recent study in 2017 found similar links between diets higher in dairy and breast cancer.
Breast cancer is one of the most prominent diseases in the United States. Especially during breast cancer months, many companies announce their donations to cancer causes or place pink ribbons on products to show support for cancer. The Center for Disease Control estimates that 41, 487 women died from breast cancer in 2016 in the United States.
Pink ribbons in products are part of this factor. According to the Neal Barnard, MD Doctoral Committee, "Instead of cheese manufacturers such as Kraft dropping a pink ribbon on products like Philadelphia Cream Cheese and Macaroni & Cheese, as they have done with past Breast Cancer Awareness Months, they should add warning labels. We want women to know that dairy cheese can be at risk of dying from breast cancer. ”Dr. Barnard has author of the book, The Cheese Trap .
Dairy has been linked to other health problems, including acne. Jon Stewart and his wife recently supported a vegan diet to help women prevent breast cancer. Read more about the enormous benefits that a vegan diet can have to your health on One Green Planet.
