Within three weeks of eating a diet made by scientists to support a planet with 10 billion people, I learned about my own food intake and the increase food in 2050. This week, I looked into my refrigerator and realized that there was something I was really struggling with.
I push the spinach, I see the embarrassment of leftovers packed with the best intention but left slowly and transformed inside the mason jars and various containers. I look at Vegan nacho cheese (where you have to make you even say anything Vegan anything) I'm preparing to add to the galaxy, and wondering if it will meet the same fate. While eating what is called the planetary diet diet diet keeps me focused on what's on the plate, it also places the food that goes into waste in extreme relief.
Food waste is a big problem, and whereas it is not & # 39; Unique Americans, we do more of them than most countries. The Department of Agriculture estimates that garbage constitutes 30 to 40 percent of our food supply, while the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that "more food is reaching landfills and combustion facilities than any other single material our daily waste "in 2015. year shows that average Americans wastes nearly a pound of food per day. At the same time, a shocking 40 million Americans are lacking in food security.
There have been attempts to address parts of the food waste issue, from delivery services that send you the ugly farmer (in theory) to the city composting programs. But as Emily Atkin found for the New Republic, the former proved to be a small problem. While the latter moves trash from landfills where it can produce methane and instead puts it in good use, a better use gets food for those who need it. Fewer foods will be reduced to farmers and ranchers growing lower, reducing the need for water, land, and nutrients.
And this is something not only in the U.S., but the whole world needs to work. The EAT-Lancet report outlining the planetary health diet I test driving shows that eating garbage removal is the single largest action that will help reduce fertilizer applications worldwide. Waste waste alone can also use agricultural water back to a sustainable level, and it will help reduce land use in agriculture and greenhouse gas emissions a bit. (Other strategies, such as transferring diet to the world, are more effective in greetings.)
In short on the EAT-Lancet report, the commission behind it indicates the packing of the remainder for at lunch, or finding creative uses for them. I do the same, but my creative use of turning my refrigerator into a science experiment is probably not what the authors of the report think. The brief also implies making a diet plan, which I usually do when I'm not lazy (see Exhibit A below).
But after making "peculiar nachos," with the mentioned vegan cheese, sweet potatoes and cauliflower, I was left in this difficult amount of sweet potato queso. It is too small for a future sing of nachos but is not enough to justify the washing. In fact, I realized that it was almost all my turn. Here are the handfuls of lentils that I swear to add to a salad at one point, there was a speck of hummus I thought maybe I could do the base of a salad dressing.
I've always been a bit of a lost disaster. But the planet's health plate has ironically kicked it in excess of growth, as I am making full grain in bulk and buying more perishable produce to keep up with food.
I have no real ideas for how to fix it, apart from eating the remnants of my feelings. But the problem comes to mind that we do not spend almost enough energy in talking about what easily makes the lowest yields on a sustainable arsenal meal, which does not raise hacking like talking about food fewer meat, for example.  Nobody likes a dreaded Sunday when it's time to clean the fridge; shoveling leftovers and chucking particles separately and half without opening cartons in the trash. It is a terrible daily activities that are usually poured out of money and the planet into the garbage. Now that I'm a little more aware of the problem, I'll do my best to make sure the back of my refrigerator is no longer a wasteland of disappointed dreams.
