As we spend more time at home during the Covid-19 pandemic, you may be looking for ways to zhuzh your space. Bobby Berk, Netflix’s “Queer Eye” interior design guru, says there’s one item in the house that is definitely worth spending a bit on: your mattress.
According to Berk, your mattress “has the most impact on your health, your mental health, your back [and] over the course of the day, “Berk told CNBC Do It.
In fact, your sleep environment ̵1; which includes your mattress, room temperature and lighting – can affect the quality of your sleep, and your mental health.
A good night’s sleep allows your brain to build or maintain neural pathways that will help you learn, create new memories, pay attention and respond quickly, according to the National Institutes of Health. Insomnia, on the other hand, can intensify the feeling of anxiety and stress.
At the start of Berk’s career, he remembered being “dirty dirt” and living in a studio apartment in New York City. “I sleep on an air mattress which, usually once a week, I have to go back to Kmart because it gets a hole,” he said.
Berk grew up in Missouri, but left home and stopped studying at 15. He worked in various retail stores in Colorado before moving to New York City in 2003, where he earned another retail retail in Hardware Restoration and introduced in interior design.
The first big purchase Berk made with his tax refund was a proper mattress. “I remember just laying on that mattress [with] two of my friends who also moved to New York with me from Denver, and we were like, ‘Oh my God, we are rich. This is life. ‘”
“This bed is the most luxurious thing in the world to me, even though it is not an extremely expensive bed,” Berk said. Depending on the materials, size and features, a mattress costs $ 250 to $ 4,000.
Berk said “anything to do in bed” is worth spending a little extra, like good sheets.
“You have to sleep every night, and when your feet touch the sheets, it should be like waking up as if you were in a nice hotel,” Berk said. “That’s the mood and feeling you should have when you sleep [and] when you wake up, because that is how you end your day and the beginning of your day. “
