Michael Osterholm, a well-known infectious disease expert, told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that “the next six to 12 weeks will be the darkest in the entire pandemic” and expressed concern that the US has no leading voice to guide the public. .
“Vaccines will not be available in any meaningful way until early [the] third quarter of next year. And even so, nearly half of the U.S. population at this point is hesitant even to get vaccinated, “said Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.
Osterholm pointed to the daily count of 70,000 new COVID-19 cases on Friday in the United States, the highest level since July. Between now and the holiday season, the number of COVID-19 cases in the US is likely to “blow up there,” he said.
He emphasized that one cause of concern was the number of voices guiding the public rather than just one, “part of the problem.”
“It’s more than science. It brings people together to understand why we do it. This is the approach to the fireside of the FDR fireside chat, and we just don’t do that,” he said, referring to the nightly radio addresses of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the Great Depression boosted public confidence.
Osterholm says the goal is to achieve the flock of immunity, not by allowing people to contract the virus, but by stimulating them through an immunization program. That requires building confidence in public.
“We need someone to start saying, ‘What is our long-term plan? How do we get there? Why are we asking people to sacrifice distance? Why are we telling people that if you really love your family, you will not go home? for Thanksgiving or Christmas and infecting mom or dad or grandpa and grandma.
