MagSafe is centered on a compatible charger on new iPhones using a set of magnets.

This story is part of Apple event, our full range of the latest news from Apple headquarters.

Apple’s four new iPhone 12 models – which now available to preorderall have 5G, better cameras and the return of a beloved feature that Apple has long used in MacBooks: the MagSafe charger.

MagSafe for iPhone 12 uses a magnetic connection to attach a wireless charger and a potential endless supply of magnetic accessories you can snap in, such as cases, dock, mounting and even a purse.

Ang iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max represents a bold new direction for Apple and a new way for iPhone owners to use their phones.

We will try MagSafe on iPhone 12 soon. In the meantime, here’s a look at what Apple said MagSafe does, how it works and how you can use it once you upgrade. And here’s why MagSafe is Apple’s bigger sleep feature than you think.

How does MagSafe work on the iPhone?

The new iPhone 12 devices are embedded in what Apple describes as “a set of magnets” (Apple said they recycled) around a central charging coil that can get up to 15 watts of power – twice as powerful as wireless charging on previous iPhones (but equivalent to phones from other brands).

When you bring the charging end of the power cord to the back of the iPhone, the magnets pull it into place. The same goes for other MagSafe accessories and, depending on what you are clipping, your iPhone will display a short animation associated with the accessory to confirm it is locked.

Do new iPhones include MagSafe charging cable?

No, Apple will only include a USB-C-to-Lightning cable (and no power bricks or earbuds) in the box with new iPhones. Apple’s two MagSafe charging cables – one standalone and another charging Apple Watch – will be sold separately, but Apple has confirmed that at least one other manufacturer, Belkin, will also sell MagSafe billing charges.

How much do Apple MagSafe accessories cost and when will they be sold?

The standalone MagSafe iPhone charger is available for preorder for $ 39, with shipping listed as two to three weeks. Cases of clear and silicon cost $ 49 shipping within 7 to 10 business days. The leather wallet costs $ 59 and will ship in five to six weeks. There is no word yet on the price of having a dual iPhone and Apple Watch.

Apple also unveiled a MagSafe compatible leather wallet that clipped to new iPhones and cost $ 59.

Which accessories does MagSafe use?

Aside from the charger, Apple has announced that leather wallet as well as a range of leather, silicone and clear cases (the wallet can be added to the top of the cases). It is possible to charge wirelessly with cases but not available while the wallet is attached.

Furthermore, you can expect third-party accessory manufacturers to use their imaginations in the coming weeks and months. Possibilities include mounts, such as for the dash in your car, and ports for your nighttand, desk or desk.

Won’t the magnets mess up my bank cards?

Apple says the wallet accessory is special protection to prevent damage to credit cards, debit cards and more.

Does MagSafe mess with waterproofing?

No, each iPhone 12 is rated IP68, meaning water resistant up to 6 meters in 30 minutes. In fact, MagSafe wireless charging may lead to greater waterproofing, whether Apple decides to be portless.

Do I need to use MagSafe to charge my iPhone?

No, every iPhone 12 comes with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable (you’ll need to provide the power brick). The Lightning port on the phone itself will be back-compatible with the Lightning chargers you already own.

MagSafe accessories such as chargers and wallets can be stacked on top of others, such as cases.

Will my current wireless charger work on new iPhones?

Yes, the new iPhones are backwards compatible with existing Qi-wireless charging devices. If your old device provides 7.5 watts of power, your new iPhone will draw that much, but it will be able to draw up to 15 watts.

Notably, the new MagSafe charger is also backwards compatible with older iPhones (but will only deliver 7.5 watts).

Didn’t Motorola first have the magnetic accessories?

Yes In 2016, the Moto Z series introduced a phone that connects magnets to Moto Mods: cases, wireless battery packs, a projector, a mobile gaming console and even a fancy DSLR like camera rig with optical zoom.

While Motorola has been releasing Moto Z magnetic phones for a number of years, smart modules have never been caught (even Motorola seems not always enthusiastic), and also did not do the massive ecosystem of accessories which Motorola predicted. We’ll see if Apple, with global status and dedicated fans, stands a better chance.

How does MagSafe work on MacBooks?

The original MagSafe on MacBooks was a way to magnetically connect Apple’s proprietary cable to the laptop, designed to be snapped with a tug. It is included in the name of salvation.

Accidentally passing a power cord no longer means worrying about launching your laptop into the room or crashing yourself, as the magnet is strong enough to connect the cable but still loose to pull for free in the event of an injury. On the iPhone, MagSafe seems to be more about mobility, making it easier to connect and disconnect with both power and accessories.
