Manchester United player ratings: Daniel James good but Jesse Lingard poor in Crystal Palace loss – Samuel Luckhurst

Manchester United slumped to their first defeat of the season, 2-1 to Crystal Palace and here's how we rated the players:

David de Gea

Easily beaten by Jordan Ayew for the opener but saved well from Wilfried Zaha as Palace nearly went 2-0 up in the first-half. At fault for the winner. 4

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Started superbly again down the right and really drove the attack forward. Once Palace became a threat, he had to contend with Zaha. 6

Harry Maguire

Began well and played Marcus Rashford through for a chance at 0-0. Positioning for Ayew's goal was too porous. 6

Victor Lindelof

Did not convince Chelsea and Wolves and he was easily outjumped by Jeffrey Schlupp to regress to his fearful 201

7 level. 3

Luke Shaw

United's early dominance was underpinned by both full-backs but for the second month running Shaw succumbed to injury. 6

Paul Pogba

Tried to make things happen and was allowed to take a free-kick by Rashford. But things did not come off. 5

Scott McTominay

His place would be in genuine jeopardy had United signed a midfielder. Against the teams who sit back, McTominay looks limited. Palace sat back. 4

Jesse Lingard

Did not justify his selection and one aimless pass through to nobody elicited groans from supporters. Not the solution at No.10. 2

Daniel James

Spurned a good chance to put United ahead but rushed his shot. More composed than at Wolves, kept going and scored a brilliant equaliser. 7

Marcus Rashford

Wasted a good chance when one-on-one at 0-0 by losing his footing, cocked up free-kicks and then missed a penalty to prolong the spotkick debate. 4

Anthony Martial

Easily United's most threatening forward whenever he got the ball but just didn't receive it enough. Gary Cahill should have been sent off for deliberately tripping him. Assisted James. 7

Subs

Ashley Young

Failed to deliver a killer pass when he spent enough time in Palace's third. 5

Mason Greenwood

Helped win the penalty. 6

Juan Mata

Came on too late. N / A
