FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots have put in place the right guard Shaq Mason, defensive end Derek Rivers and Sony Michel backing the reserve / COVID-19 list, a source told ESPN Field Yates.
The contents of the reserve / COVID-19 list are either tested positive for COVID-19 or a close contact with a positive person.
On Friday, the Patriots canceled practice after a positive COVID-19 test. Later that day, the club placed center James Ferentz on the reserve / COVID-19 list.
The Patriots will host the Denver Broncos on Sunday (CBS, 1 pm ET), and Ferentz, Mason and Rivers will not play. Michel is still not playing because he was injured.
The start of the defensive tackle Byron Cowart is also on the reserve / COVID-19 list, and will not play.
The NFL rules for 2020 have teams required to fill in the blanks like this, starting with a higher skill team of 16 players, in addition to the two exclusions when transferring players between training squad and active list as part of a “standard increase.” Teams also have the option to raise players as specific COVID-19 replacements for players who fall into the reserve / COVID-19 list.
Along those lines, the Patriots lifted offensive lineman Caleb Benenoch from their training squad Saturday as part of a “height standard.”
In addition, defensive end Rashod Berry, receiver Isaiah Zuber and defensive tackle Nick Thurman have been promoted as a definite replacement for COVID-19 for Sunday’s game.
