Greg Alyn Carlson was placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list in the fall 2018.
FBI agents monitor him at a hotel in Apex, North Carolina. A policeman sees a car at the hotel's parking lot associated with Carlson, says John Strong of the FBI field office in North Carolina.
When agents entered the hotel room, an altercation against a gun ensued and Carlson died, said Paul Delacourt, assistant FBI field assistant in the Los Angeles field.
Carlson was accused of a thief in Los Angeles on July 13, 2017, where he attempted a sexual assault by a woman while using a weapon. A local arrest warrant issued for Carlson will charge him with theft, an attack on the purpose of rape and attacks on a lethal weapon, according to the FBI.
DNA tests were also linked to Carlson in two other attacks from 2003, Billy Hayes of Los Angeles Police said.
He was arrested in September 201
He left South Carolina with a stolen handgun, a rental car and cash and led the police at a high-speed chase in Alabama. He was seen in two cities in Florida in November 2017.
A federal arrest warrant issued in December 2017 will be charged Carlson on unlawful flight to avoid persecution.
