Trophies are awarded in the 34th edition of the Film Independent Spirit Awards with Barry Jenkins adaptation by James Baldwin's If Beale Street Can Say to the Most Trophies including Best Feature, Best Director for Jenkins and Best Supporting Women for Regina King.
Other big honorees of the evening included Boots Riley winning Best First Feature for his surreal class and race comedy Sorry To Bother You and Glenn Close (who took his dog Pip as his date) to go home to the trophy for the Female Lead for his role in The Wife, continues his win over. Ethan Hawke's performance at First Reformed earned him the Best Male Lead while Richard E. Grant left the trophy for Best Supporting Male.
John Cassavetes Award, presented to the creative team of a movie budget of less than $ 500,000 by the Film Independent, was awarded to En El Septimo Dia. Now in its second year, the Bonnie Award, which recognizes female directors in mid-career, was given to Debra Granik of Leave No Trace .
Oscar-snubbed by Morgan Neville G. Rogers doc You Did not Like My Second found justification for a Best Documentary win while Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty have put themselves in a great position for possible Oscar win when they win for Best Movie for Can You Forgive Me?
Filled with fast quips, a sketchy sketchy theme and some unfair jabs in the industry, the ceremony shifted to a fast pace with the help of the Aubrey Plaza host. This is a great amuse bouche at the Academy Awards ceremony tomorrow.
