Nearly three dozen people detained at a state correctional facility in Fairbanks tested positive for COVID-19, the Alaska Department of Corrections said in a statement Saturday night.
The cases identified on Saturday involved 32 men and a woman in the general population at the Fairbanks Correctional Center, the correction department said.
All staff and inmates at the facility will be tested Saturday night, the correction department said, adding that the results are expected to be returned by Monday night. Those who tested positive.
“While we do not want this day to come, the FCC outbreak is an event prepared by the Department,” Department of Corrections Commissioner Nancy Dahlstrom said in a statement. “Our focus at this point is on protecting those in the most vulnerable facilities and identifying any additional institutional cases.”
Prior to the announcement of the outbreak of the Fairbanks Correctional Center, there were only five cases of COVID-19 among general population prisoners across the state, Department of Corrections data showed on Saturday. There are an additional 97 cases of people remanded across the state, with correctional officials saying more reflecting of those infected within the community as a whole as opposed to within the closed facility.
As of Thursday, 147,100 people in the country’s prisons had tested positive for COVID-19, while 1,246 COVID-19 had died in the inmates, according to The Marshall Project.
Fairbanks is battling another outbreak in a vibrant lifestyle setting. Fairbanks Pioneer Home saw many new COVID-19 cases among residents and staff in October. The state-run domestic helper reported 53 cases related to the outbreak in the past few weeks.
