"Any confidence in a person to intervene in any type of safety-critical capacity is a red herring. They will not be able to make it reliable enough to make these systems, I think, safe for the road," he says.

Systems like Autopilot, Super Cruise, Nissan's ProPilot Assist, and Volotope Pilot Assist rely on unrealistic expectations about how well people can take on the road and quickly react when required by the semi-autonomous system they control, Cummings said.
"We can not focus, especially on the boring environment such as highway driving," he said. "It's hoped man will only affect when we know they have not paid attention to a big problem."
A Tesla representative has transferred the Business Insider to a page on its website describing its vehicle safety strategy and includes statistics about accident rates for Tesla vehicles with and without Autopilot sharing. In the fourth quarter of 2018, Tesla said there was an accident every 2.91 million miles driven by Tesla vehicles with Autopilot who were involved, compared to an accident of 1.58 million miles driven by Tesla vehicles without Autopilot geared and a car that crashed every 436,000 miles driven for all US vehicles. But Tesla's data is not considered for reasons, such as environments where Autopilot is often used, which may also account for some of the differences in accident rates.
Nissan and Volvo did not respond to a request for comment.
There are semi-autonomous features, such as those that alert the driver if the car is driving his passage or some advanced cruise control system – which can brake or accelerate based on the surrounding traffic – it may be useful, especially at low speed, said Cummings. The danger comes when vehicles control the driving activities at higher speeds.
"I'm a big fan of self-reliance of slow speed," she says. "This is when we see cars at speed increases under unstructured environments with more uncertainty that car control systems actually crash."
