Can a major US measles outbreak be next to Essex County?
In the wake of the country's worst outbreak in the fourth century, researchers in a new study said they met the top 25 counties in
Essex County was reached the 15th list, according to a study published last week in The Lancet's medical record.
Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin and Johns Hopkins University looked at factors such as nonmedical vaccine exemption rates, a growing anti-vaccine movement, regions near major international airports and density of the population.
The five leading counties are Cook County, Illinois; Los Angeles County, California; Miami-Dade County, Florida; Queens, New York City; and the County of the King, Washington.
Health experts say that Essex County is not surprising to have made the list, even though it has not been hit as hard as measles, like other parts of the state such as Ocean County, where the majority cases
The county, like other regions that have been studying, is a highly populated area and home to Newark Liberty International Airport, a major hub for international travelers.
"We have always known that the airport may be a point of contact with infectious diseases," says David Cennimo, a contagious disease expert at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.
Earlier this month, state health officials said that a traveler could be exposed to other infectious diseases in
Looking at the countries of origin of international travelers, studies indicate that India, China, Mexico, Japan, Ukraine, Philippines and Thailand are the biggest threats for measles.
Although the study was not listed in Brooklyn, where the massive measles outbreak was infested by hundreds of people, mostly in an Orthodox community of Jews, researchers maintained the efficiency of the model, saying that at least 30 of the 45 counties reported measles cases in 2019 are on the list.
"Our results correctly predicted areas in Washington, Oregon, and New York have had major measles outbreaks. Brooklyn, New York, which reported more than 300 cases, was in next to Queens, New York, ranked fourth, "according to study researchers.
Time will tell when the theory holds Essex County. This year, there are 839 measles cases in 23 US states, according to the latest data from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This means that just five months in 2019, the US has seen the highest number of reported cases since 1994 and since the disease was declared to be revoked in 2000, the CDC said.
"These high numbers show that the United States remains at risk for major measles epidemics such as those recently seen in Europe," says study. Cennimo said that the continuing effects of measles in communities around the country, the best thing you can do is vaccinate, as researchers point out that another major contributor to the problem, especially because of non- non-medical vaccination examinations. 9002] Spencer Kent may be reached at email@example.com .
