Trump rebuked Collins in the midst of a difficult re-election fight

Collins said he would oppose Barrett’s nomination because of the proximity of the presidential election nomination process.

“There is a bad rumor there that @SenatorCollins of Maine will not support our great United States Supreme Court,” Trump tweeted. “So, he doesn’t support Healthcare or my opening 5000 square miles of Ocean in Maine, so why is it different. It’s not worth the job!”

Collins, who is seeking re-election for the fifth term in the Senate, is facing his toughest election battle against defiant Sara Gideon, Maine Democratic News spokesperson. A Very Clear Politics average poll shows Gideon with a nearly 4-percent-point edge over Collins less than three weeks before Election Day.

Trump’s tweet criticizing Collins could make his efforts harder. He is among a handful vulnerable to GOP senators in intense reversal of the re-run, and his loss will make it harder for Republicans to maintain control of the Senate.

Collins is one of the more independent thinking Republicans in the Senate. Trump on Friday seemed to be zero in on Collins ’2017 decision to oppose the GOP Senate bill repealing the Affordable Care Act, which ensured the law had no votes to pass the chamber.

Collins also signaled disapproval of Trump’s decision earlier this year to rollback protections to a marine conservation area outside New England, opening up 5,000 square miles of commercial fishing in the middle of the resistance of environmentalists.

Collins is the only Republican senator who said he would oppose Barrett’s nomination.
