SALT LAKE CITY – For the fifth day in a row, Utah health officials on Sunday reported more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases as well as three additional deaths.
1,097 cases were confirmed in 7,487 trials – a 14.7% positive rate, according to the Utah Department of Health. The rolling seven-day average for new cases was 1,206 per day, and the average positive test rate was 14.2%.
Current hospitalizations fell slightly on Sunday to 291, down from the state record of 298. Utah intensive care units were 71.9% overall, and non-unit units were 52% overall.
Just over three weeks after officials enforced a mask mandate, Utah County cases continue to decline. On Sunday, the province calculated for just under 25% of state cases. But almost all other provincial or state health districts are still seeing an increase in new cases, according to state health department data.
Meanwhile, each province also continues to confirm disease rates considered “very high”; by health officials, with the exception of the provinces of Daggett, Uintah, Duchesne and San Juan, as well as northern Washington County and Cedar City.
The death reported Sunday brought toll to the state in 543 Utahns. The dead were a man in Salt Lake County between the ages of 65 and 84 who was a long-term care resident; a woman in Salt Lake County between 65-84 was hospitalized when she died; and a Davis County woman between 45-64 who was also hospitalized.
Now 94,394 positive cases have been confirmed in Utah out of 973,938 people tested since the pandemic began, with an overall positive rate of 9.7%. Nearly 70,200 of the state cases are considered recovered after passing the three-week point since they were diagnosed.
