These serious new statistics follow Gov. Tony Evers (D) declaring a public health emergency on September 23 as new cases continue to rise. On Tuesday, he confirmed the state is in the midst of a “crisis.”

“We have been in this pandemic for nine months,” Evers told the press. “It doesn’t slow down. It takes speed. We need to put the brakes on this pandemic.”

Some 683 patients are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 infections, an increase of 37 patients from the previous day, according to Wisconsin Hospital Association. This figure also represents a fierce record high as new cases rise.

In response to the influx, Evers emphasized the mandatory face mask ordinance and urged people to avoid going out and attending events where delivery may occur.

“Skip play dates, dinner celebrations, family reunions and work conferences or any other gatherings with people you haven’t been with at the moment,” Evers said. “I can’t stress it out enough. No party, no bar, no gathering worthwhile.”

Evers’ administration became law a Safer At-Home order in April, which was hurt of the state Supreme Court in May following a ruling that the governor exceeded his authority in issuing an emergency declaration, according to Wisconsin Public Radio.

Ryan Westergaard, chief medical officer of the Bureau of Communicable Diseases at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, highlighted growing concern that as colder weather approaches and winter sets in, respiratory viruses such as COVID- 19 is spreading faster.

“We are now setting notes at a point which is the beginning of the respiratory virus era,” Westergaard said. “If we did nothing else, I would say there is a good chance it will get worse before it recovers.”
